Psychological Security and Creativity

Updated: Jul 16, 2021

The concept of Psychological security emerges from the theory of hierarchy of needs that was proposed by Dr. Abraham Maslow.

Security need which is categorized as deficiency need, when not met , individual may develop feelings of threat or harm, feel anxious, tense, become less satisfied with life, may not desire the higher level needs. ( Maslow,1943)

Psychological security is a state in which a person perceives that their environment is safe and free from harm and threat ( Maslow, Hirsh, Stein and Honigmann, 1945).

Feelings of Psychological security foster pleasant interpersonal relationships.

Maslow ( 1943) in Dynamics of Psychological Security – Insecurity has mentioned that individuals who do not feel psychological security usually feel isolated, anxious, hostile, pessimistic or show signs of tension in their IPRs.

When an individual is found to be psychologically secure, they would have feelings of being liked or loved, of acceptance, of being looked upon with warmth, feelings of friendliness and trust in others; little hostility; tolerance of others; easy affection for others.

In my understanding, an extrapolation of Psychological security could actually lead to an increased sense of creativity and creative security as well!

When one is psychological secure, then one shall not be running a race to prove being better or best. I say so because one is full of acceptance of their own self- their own parts that make them a whole, then the very desire to run towards any of these desires is slowly relinquished, that is where true creativity originates.

Then what only matters is the creator and their creative canvas and rest is all full of ever flowing colours.
